Our pooches' birthdays and ‘gotcha’ days are a momentous occasion in any dog-parent’s calendar!

A day to smother them (even more than usual) with love, pawresents, treatos - and even a doggo birthday cake for the most elite of the pampered pups.

The 23rd July marks Pepper’s Birthday - our incredible Founder’s even more incredible pooch (sorry Guy). So what better time to share our recipe for a lip-smackingly good, dog-friendly birthday cake recipe?

Throw them a pawty!

Most of our furry friends are likely to have tried a pupcake or two in their lives. But having one big pawty-style cake to make them feel like royalty on their special day, is worth every bit of effort.

Singing, slicing and sharing amongst pooch pals = the recipe to success.

Throw in a pawty hat, games with furiends, and all their favourite people - and it’ll be a day to remember for everyone.

Ingredients

Birthday Cake

  • 2 eggs
  • 110 g xylitol free peanut butter
  • 60ml oil (salmon, coconut, olive)
  • 150ml milk (or water)
  • 5 tbsp honey
  • 2 large shredded carrots
  • 480g of wholemeal or white flour*
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking soda

*As flour is usually made from wheat, use an alternative if your dog's intolerant or allergic to grains. Good options include coconut flour or almond flour.

    Frosting

    • 600g - 700g potatoes , peeled and cut into chunks
    • 240g yogurt (plain unsweetened) or water

    Instructions

    Cake

    • Preheat the oven to 180C/350F (160C fan)
    • Grease and line the base of 2 x 20cm/8” cake tins
    • Whisk together eggs, peanut butter, oil, honey and milk (small peanut butter lumps are okay)
    • Stir in carrots, then add flour and baking soda. Stir until just combined (over mixing = hard cake = sad birthday pooch)
    • Divide batter between the cake pans, spread and smooth surface
    • Bake for 25 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean
    • Leave to cool on wire racks

    Fluffy frosting

    • Boil potatoes until very soft
    • Whip potato and yoghurt together with an electric whisk, until fluffy and smooth as possible
    • Use water as needed to loosen frosting to a soft, spreadable consistency (like human buttercream frosting!)
    • Spread while warm, as it ‘sets’ when cool

    Decorating

    • Spread 1/4 frosting on one cake
    • Top with other cake. Frost tops and sides with remaining frosting, reserving some to pipe decorations if desired
    • Garnish with your dog’s favourite Pooch & Mutt products!
